Sewer Inflow & Infiltration (I & I) Rehabilitation Project

Friday, August 22, 2025 – Contractors from Vortex will be working along E. Lewis Street, from M Street to past Little Creek Bend, on a sewer main rehabilitation project. The work is part of the City’s effort to reduce unwanted stormwater and groundwater entering the sanitary sewer system, often referred to as Inflow and Infiltration (I&I).

What is I&I?

Inflow: Clear water entering the sewer system from direct sources such as downspouts or foundation drains.

Infiltration: Clear water entering the sewer system through cracks, leaks, or defects in pipes and manholes.

Why does it matter?
Sanitary sewers are designed to carry wastewater to treatment facilities. When excess water enters the system, it can overload capacity, disrupt biology, increase treatment costs, and cause potential overflows. Addressing I&I is essential to protect public health, reducing costs, maintain the system’s efficiency, and protecting natural resources.

What to expect?

  • Workers will be in the area through next week.  They may ask that you stop your sanitary sewage usage for the day to facilitate the main line and lateral work. Or, your driveway may be blocked for a brief period.
  • Contractors will door-hang the area residents before starting the work.
  • During the process, the method used for this work creates a whitish fog that can be mistaken for smoke and it also has an odor similar to model-glue.  The oder is detectable to the human nose, but is not harmful.
