Patrol Services
The Livingston Police Department provides 24 hour patrol services to the community, dedicated to reducing crime, enforcing traffic laws and responding to citizen requests for assistance. Patrol officers are assigned 4 ten-hour shifts, with 3 days off. Officers rotate shifts every 2 months. Patrol shifts are as follows; 7:00 am - 5:00 pm, 5:00 pm - 3:00 am, 9:00 pm - 7:00 am, and 11:00 am - 9:00 pm during times of full staffing. The patrol officers are usually the first line of contact with citizens in need of assistance. They are ever prepared to respond to a variety of calls for service, and enforce violations of the law with vigor and fairness. Their community presence and constant focus on the criminal element is a deterrent to those who pose a threat to us all.

Patrol activities are supervised by 3 Sergeants, who work 5 eight-hour shifts, Monday through Friday. The Sergeants shifts are; 7:00 am - 3:00 pm, 3:00 pm - 11:00 pm, and 11:00 pm - 7:00 am.

Investigations
We have one full-time investigator. The investigator normally works 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday, but may adjust those hours to fit the needs of the job. The detective's various duties include investigating felony cases as assigned, coordinating with the county attorney's office to prosecute offenders, registering sexual and violent offenders, and maintaining the sexual and violent offender registration files.

Bicycle Patrol
Bicycle Patrol Officers work primarily during the summer months, weather permitting, and during times of adequate staffing. Bike patrol is a very effective method of conducting stealthy patrols in the downtown business district, as well as residential neighborhoods. Bike officers are also more accessible to citizens, enhancing public relations.  Bike patrol officers sometimes conduct bicycle safety classes to children.

School Resource Officer Program
One specially trained officer is assigned to serve as a full time School Resource Officer during the school year, focusing on enhancing safety and security for students and staff, and to increase students' knowledge of and respect for the law by building positive relationships as well as fostering educational programs and activities. The SRO program is intended to be proactive in nature, with an emphasis on preventing problems before they occur. The officer's efforts are dedicated to serving the schools, cooperating with school officials when investigating criminal offenses on or near school property and being readily available to respond to school emergencies. The position is currently funded jointly between the City of Livingston and the Livingston School District by contractual agreement.
