Public Works Department

About us

The Public Works Department of the City of Livingston stands as a cornerstone of municipal operations, wielding a profound influence on the daily lives of our city residents.

We contribute to Livingston's quality of life and economic development in many ways. We provide clean drinking water, exceeding testing standards. We foster the growth and beauty of our city parks. We complete sewer, water, and paving projects on or before schedule. We provide reliable and efficient garbage collection services and plow city streets in winter months.

Our purview extends to overseeing permitting processes, design endeavors, and maintenance efforts encompassing city streets, alleys, bridges, sanitary sewer systems, water mains, city-owned traffic signals, and street lighting infrastructure. Covering an expanse of over 6 square miles, 71 street miles, and comprising more than 50 city-owned edifices, our jurisdiction also encompasses the stewardship of 8-1/2 miles of trail systems, 173 acres of picturesque green spaces, and the preservation of 3,880 trees, all contributing to the enduring vitality and splendor of the City of Livingston.

News/Announcements:

  • Annual Spring Fliers: This year, we introduced blue permits for free green waste disposal in our Spring Flier and mailed them to our utility billing/residential property owners. If you are not enrolled in the green can program or have green waste that doesn’t fit in your green can, such as a large amount of leaf litter, small branches, etc., you can dispose of those items to the transfer station for free. However, we will continue to charge for any tree waste over 8” in diameter.  Non-city residents are charged a $30/ton (1.5 cents per pound) for green waste disposal.

Hang the permit from your vehicle review mirror and bring your green waste to the transfer station. The permit will help our attendants quickly identify eligible city residents. It must be presented or visible to the scale house attendant for free city resident green waste disposal. No exceptions will be made. The permit system should help reduce confusion and disputes stemming from fees imposed on non-city residents since July 1, 2022.

  • Spring Clean Up starts April 22nd! This annual event begins with collection on the south side, moving east to west, then to the north side, going west to east. We will not accept requests to return for items not set out during our initial visit, all items are limited to one cubic yard or less. Please have your items out.
  • Root Cutting & Sewer Line Flushing: During the warmer months, you may see our team out flushing sewer mains and performing root-cutting services on city lines. We do not perform this service for residential sewer lines. If your property requires root cutting for a sewer service line, please contact our office at (406) 222-5667. We want to inspect nearby mains to ensure no root balls were pushed into city lines.
  • Lead & Copper Pipe Inventory: The City does not have an issue with lead being present in our lines, and the drinking water is completely safe. The purpose of this project is solely focused on taking an inventory of the existing infrastructure to confirm the absence of any lead pipes within our system and ensure compliance with Federal Regulations before the October 2024 deadline. To complete this inventory, or for more information, please visit our webpage at www.livingstonmontana.org.
